Circulatory System 4

The last few post of the challenge blog have traced the development of human understanding of the circulatory system. Ideas about how a system works can start with misconceptions about the true nature of a system. One such misconception was that veins carried air through out the body. Please research and post some common misconceptions that were held about the circulatory system. Did you have any  personal misconceptions about how the circulatory system works?  Please share your misconceptions or how your understanding about the circulatory system has changed.

  1. One misconception about the circulatory system is the "single loop" model of the heart. It was thought the arteries carry blood from the heart to the body (where oxygen is deposited and waste collected) and the veins carry blood from the body to the heart (where it is cleaned and re-oxygenated.)

  2. Many years ago, many people believed the liver created blood, some people thought the heart created blood, not pumped it. When I was little, I thought that to make blood, you would need to drink cranberry juice. I also thought blood was made of ketchup. I still don't eat ketchup.

  3. My own personal misconception of the cardiovascular system was that blood was blue before it was mixed with oxygen. This was because of those diagrams in most science books use blue to color the veins carrying blood without oxygen. I think this is very misleading and should be edited. Truth be told veinous blood is much darker than arterial blood, but it is never blue. When blood mixes with oxygen it appears much redder. The reason human blood is red is because of the iron in the haemoglobin. Horseshoe crabs have blue blood though, due to their 'copper' based oxygen binding molecule.

A personal misconception I had when I was a kid was that all blood was red, but in fact it only turns red when the blood hits oxygen. In reality it is a very dark color, not even blue! There are only a few animals with truly blue blood and most of them are sea creatures... Cold blooded animals.

  5. People used to thin that the heart actually created blood. People also thought that certain foods created blood.

  7. There are a lot of misconceptions about the circulatory system. One is that your lungs arent even a part of your circulation system. Another misconception is that the blood goes in one loop around your body. Also some people thaught that the blood just circulated and did nothing for your body. I only had one misconception about the circulatory system. The misconception is that your veins moved your blood and the heart gave your blood nutrients.

Misconceptions are numerous in science and likely always will be. Pluto, for example was thought to be a planet without much doubt for perhaps a few decades. The following misconceptions relate to the circulatory system. Some people believe that blood is blue when lacking oxygen. This is a misconception. Blood is actually A BRIGHTER RED when oxygen deficient. Other people believe that blood leaves the viens at any point. It does not; only oxygen does.

Thank you and have a wonderful day....

  9. People in ancient times thought you had four vile's red, yellow, brown, and gray and so if you had to much of a vile you will be sick. So you would get bled but then you would get infected from dirty tools and then you would be sicker. Then they would bleed you again.

  11. some common misconceptions to the circulatory system are is that blood does not only carry oxygen it also carries nutrients to the heart. Some personal misconceptions are that i didn't know that the blood carried nutrients i thought it only carried blood cells. I didn't know that blood was not red and it was always blue.

  12. Some common misconceptions that people beleived was that the liver created the blood, other people thought that the HEART created blood. Another common misconception today is that blood is naturraly red when it is actually blue and turns red due to contact with oxygen. Another one is that blood leaves the veins and arteries and goes al around.
I used to think that blood traveled around the body in water when really it travels through the body in plasma.

  13. A common misconception is that the blood goes from blue to red we oxygenated, but this is a myth. The blood just turns a brighter red. If your blood turned red, when oxygenated, then when you get blood drawn, it would be blue, but it isn't. Another misconception is that blood leaves the vessels to get to the body. But really, your blood enters capillaries and the nutrients defuse and go to the cells. A misconception that I have had it that the lungs are attached to your circulatory system, but really, it is a different system.

  14. there were many misconseptions about the circulatory system. some of these miscomseptions are: that blood was blue before it was mixed with oxygen, high blood pressure isn't bad, high blood pressure cant be prevented, and that liver created blood.

  16. My common misconception about the circulatory system is about the color of blood. A lot has changed in my mind since we read this chapter.. I've learned the correct color of blood and tons of other stuff.

  17. One misconception was that veins don't carrie blood back to the heart but carrie blood away form the heart. Some people thought the liver made blood. There were many misconceptions.

  18. Some misconceptions are that your blood is red when it is with oxygen. High blood pressure is not bad at all. The liver created blood. THe veins carry blood to the heart.

  19. A common misconception that people have is that blood is blue at some point in the path of circulation. But actually human blood is red, going from bright red when oxygenated to dark red when not. I had that same misconception, but now I know that it is not true.

  21. Many people belive that blood leaves the blood vessels and enters parts of the body. There are 2 types of circulatory systems open and closed. Humans have a closed system so the blood remains in the blood vessels and the oxygen and nutrients are filterd through the capillaries. In an open system which is mainly found in insects the blood leaves the tubule and enters the body cavity.
