The smaller holes help to sort the blood and put it into different sections easier(i guess) and then if you had ballon like lungs then I dont think that they would work out at all.......
It is an advantage to have lungs with many smaller air sacs instead of have just two large sacs like balloons because you would be able to take bigger breathes and hold your breath longer and your lungs would hold more air.
Larger surface area for gas exchange to take place, so it is more efficient,Your lungs make up one of the largest organs in your body, and they work with your respiratory system to allow you to take in fresh air, get rid of stale air so you hold more air!
If you were to draw a line say six inches long with a pen on a piece of paper and then above that line draw another but instead of going from right to left, move the pen up and down so that you and up with what looks like a sine wave or the wave of a heart monitor seen in the movies. Now, imagine if this was string and you pulled the ends of the wiggley piece so that you have a straight line, you can see how much more material there is and if this is a surface area that is responsible for absorbing oxygen, the longer piece of string would absorb two to three times more oxygen. Having lots of sacks in the lungs is a way of increasing the surface area for the absorption of oxygen. Hope this helps.

Why is it an advantage to have lungs with many smaller air sacs instead of having just two large sacs like balloons? the advantage is that more air can be held in the smaller spaces because there are more of them.

It's an advantage because if one sac isn't working well, you still have others that work well and you won't get affected as bad. There could also be more air space.
Think about it this way. Imagine a company that manufactures something. Would they rather have easier to monitor smaller factories, or two chaotic factories. Plus clumps of smaller alveoli have a larger surface area for active transport.
It's better to have two lungs with many sack rather than two very big sacks because if you have multiple sacks because if you have multiple sacks you can be exchanging more oxygen and carbon dioxide at the same time
i think smaller are better because they could propably hold more air than larger ones
ReplyDeleteYou would be able to take deeper breathes and hold your breath longer, also they would hold more air.
ReplyDeletei think smaller are better because it doesnt need that much oxygen and can hold breath longer maybe....
ReplyDeleteThere is probably more space to store air.

if there are many holes your breathes can be longer so you won't hyper ventilate and die.
ReplyDeleteYou can have more oxygen by having more because you have more space to hold oxygen.

ReplyDeleteWith two large you don't have as much surface area.
